here you go:

some of these lines I could actually make educated guesses to complete certain fields, but some rows are without 'total paid' as well as 'price/litre', and are too far apart from other purchases to be able to guess a price that is close to what was paid...

Thank you for spending time on this!

M.

Got it.

It seems the "or" of "5 or 8 columns" is a pretty hard "or" in that your file must only contain data with one or the other, not both. Obviously, just entering the 5 columns is your best bet. If you want to add the other bits of data from the other 3 columns, you could do that manually.

Alternatively, import all the data with 5 columns first then, in a separate action, import the data with 8 columns.

We tried to keep Import's complexity low but I realize, in some ways, it makes things more complicated.

After reading through this thread and trying a couple of times, I just successfully imported using Windows Notepad.

My one entry test is below: (date,vehicle,odometer,gallons,1=full,cost/gallon,total cost, octane)

12/20/2008 6:57 PM,Civic,1501,7.158,1,1.549,11.09,87

Save file with *.csv extension, import and then sync. Now I'm going to try bigger imports.

Very good. That's really one of the better programs to use in Windows because it doesn't have hidden characters and formatting, generally. Excel can totally ruin files or, at least, confuse any other program that tries to handle it.

Josh

can you modify your instruction page as follows and make it sticky at the start of the forum?

The date format HAS TO BE American i.e. month/day/year
The csv file has to be edited to remove inverted commas around the vehicle name
Show an example of the 2 acceptable formats i.e 5 or 8 fields

I'll add examples soon.

The date formats have been pretty flexible but I suppose they are all just variations on American formats.

I've been using Gas Cubby for a little over a year now and love it. However, when I upgraded my iPhone 3G to an iPhone 3GS all of my existing Gas Cubby data didn't come over in the restore (I used iTunes). After the restore I only had the most recent 5 fillups. Here's what I did to get all of my data on my new phone.

1. I should mention I still had both phones when doing this
2. From the old phone still containing all of the data I created an account to synch
3. Went to my Email account and confirmed the Email from app cubby
4. From the old phone I did an export (using instructions on this forum)
5. From the old phone I did a synch
6. From the new phone I deleted all local data
7. From the new phone I added the same app cubby Email address as above and did a synch (I did have to confirm another Email before it would allow a synch)

All data (including service and my wife's car) carried over.

Hope that helps someone else. Thanks for the great app and forum! :)

Though not Import, thanks for sharing! Those are the steps I suggest, including the precautionary steps 1 and 4.

When I try to import my 93 octane purchases, they import as blank. They show up on the graph as Other/Diesel. I tried editing the high octane from 90+ to 93 but that did not make any difference. Am I doing something wrong or is this a known issue? Thanks!
