I think your competitors are hard at work on a desktop app that matches and completely syncs with the iPhone app. I think that you should be too.
You might be right. Where did you get that information?

Allow decimals in odometer reading
Allow units of hours instead of miles (and gal/hr)
Allow different units for each vehicle (I think I've seen this request before)

I'd like to be able to use this to track fuel for my plane, but I use gal/hr for that.

This can be done already. http://www.appcubby.com/gas/manual.html#measurement

Great app, except for the MPG calculations that are not real time MPG's.

Driving style (in-town, long distance, off-road etc) influence MPG more then the brand of gas purchased at the previous fill up

An option that allows the user the select how to calculate MPG is a must.

The issue is not HOW it's calculated, but where the number is placed. The confusion stems from everyone (including me) doing it the wrong way forever. The purpose of Gas Cubby is to tell you exactly what is going on: if the data is misrepresented, an assessment will be wrong.

For example, if you ate a Power Bar just before a marathon, finished the 26.2 miles and sat down to a big steak dinner, would you say the steak dinner is what gave you the energy to finish the marathon?

The only way to do "real time calculations" is to tap into your vehicle's emissions system and determine the actual amount of fuel consumed each second, similar to a speedometer. A number of cars have this feature now and BMW's, for example, have had it for years.

The top of the screen is already pretty busy. Any other ideas? Perhaps a Sync button requiring two taps or a confirmation?

What about providing an option to autosync? I'm not sure if it's possible but it seems that you might be able to remove that icon if this option was enabled. It would also go a long way towards making the application foolproof for those of us who aren't syncing multiple devices.

This would be ideal. I can't even think of a reason to not have it automatically sync once it's enabled. That's sort of the point of syncing something to the internet. I'm just kind of annoyed I guess because I lost the last 4 months of data because I reinstalled Windows and in trying to get iTunes to recognize my apps and such it deleted Gas Cubby, and all the data went with it. I didn't really think anything of it, since I had enabled syncing. Of course that didn't help at all.

Auto-sync is a problem because it could slow down the iPhone. If it's trying to sync in the background and it can't get a good connection or it does it regularly, you'd get pretty annoyed. Plus, if it's auto-syncing, it would make data-saving a ninja-effort - realizing there is data loss and getting in and taking care of business before the next auto-sync or getting in to stop the auto-sync.

Still, we might be able to come up with an efficient way to do so.

Post subject: Change MPG chart line color for varying gas octanes?

I love this app, and with some general imrprovement to service, it'll be pretty much perfect. One of the top 5 iPhone apps I've used, period, across all categories.

My car can use both 93 Octane and 87 Octane, with 93 recommended but 87 considered perfectly acceptable. Internet wisdom suggests no difference in gas mileage between octanes in general, but I'm curious about this specific vehicle since the computer definitely alters performance based on gas octane. To do this I've run the car with about 8 fills of 87 and am currently working my way through about the same number of 93 octane.

With that in mind, how about displaying the MPG chart with different colored lines for different grades of fuel used? Once the weather gets winter cold (eg, 10-20 deg F), I'm going to try another round of 87 octane and then another round of 93 to see if there's any variation associated with cold.

It'd be a little easier to judge the comparison if the MPG chart would change the color of the line when the octane changed. It does this already for gas price per gallon.

I know I can filter and look at charts separately, but it'd be nice seeing the values overlapped. It's probably over the top, but maybe a settings page for MPG charts that allows for a unified chart, separate lines by Octane or separate lines by gas Brand. Right now I do these with exports in Excel, but don't have enough brand data points to see a difference.

[FWIW, I've seen about .8 MPG improvement with 93 Octane. Not enough increase to pay for the increased cost of 93 Octane, but I figure that shaving the cost by half or so will make the added performance worthwhile]

Moving average for consumption, please (Check out FuelLog on the Palm platform to see how it looks)

What is "moving average?" Same as "rolling average," perhaps? I've taken a look at http://palmfuellog.sourceforge.net/ and am unsure what you're requesting. If you're referring to the overall average fuel efficiency, we already offer that and it's listed immediately below a vehicle's name at the bottom of the main screen.
