I am preparing to do my first on-line sync. A question appears asking: Delete Local Data or Delete Synced Data. Being new, I do not understand the ramifications or advantages/disadvantages. Please advise.

I believe Delete Synced Data refers to deleting data that you may have already synced to the Gas Cubby servers. Delete Local Data would delete what is on your device.

I've only synced once, when I got a new iPhone, but my understanding, or my guess, is as follows:
When you want to sync info from your device to the online server, delete synced data from the server and replace it with the data from your device (when you perform the sync). When you want to sync data back to your device, you can delete local data and restore the data from the online servers back onto your device (when you perform the sync). I'm not sure of the exact steps I took, but I think that when I synced the data back onto my device without first deleting it, I had duplicate entries. I'm not sure if the same would happen if you don't delete synced data before syncing your data with the online data.

This being your first time syncing online, there should be no harm deleting synced data first. You would not want to delete local data, since that would erase your data without having a backup.

Have fun using Gas Cubby. I think it's a great app!

If you've never used Sync before, there's no reason to tap Delete Sync Data.

We've seen the duplicates issue before but there are very few users who've had this problem (and reported it) and we're unable to duplicate the issue so it's essentially impossible to resolve it.

What did you try?

The correct instructions are the following:

First, set up and run Online Sync in the Lite version, including tapping Sync.

Second, set up Online Sync in the full version using the *same* email address. Once you get to the step where you tap Sync, all your data should transfer.

http://www.appcubby.com/gas/manual.html#sync

If that isn't working, I'd like you to do a hard reset to ensure the OS flushes the cache and starts fresh. Don't worry, you won't lose any data or settings.

To hard reset, press-hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until the device shuts off and begins to restart, not letting go until you see the silver Apple.

After that, try again.

I just bought a new iPhone 3GS last week, so I restored my previous iPhone 3G data to it, then upgraded from Gas Cubby Lite to the full version. Most of my records got totally screwed up.

I think what was at fault is that the Gas Cubby prefs (i.e km/l instead of MPG) were not carried over from the Gas Cubby Lite version. There may be a FAQ saying that somewhere but I didn't look before upgrading, I just expected the transition to be seemless, as the online syncing is a pretty good way I thought to ensure data integrity with just my sort of situation of switching between phones.

When I synced my records into the full version, it showed fillups of 279 litres (into a 78 litre tank!), odometer readings of 378,xxx km , etc etc..

I have just nuked both the local and synced data, and will start afresh with importing my .csv file.

I'm sorry. We are looking into including unit data in sync. It was an oversight in the beginning not to do so and yet another not to make instructions more obvious.

The proper way is, of course, to adjust the units prior to transferring the data. Also, though your data appeared corrupted, I've guided a handful of users through getting it all back in order.

No problem, Josh. It was a minor annoyance but I knew I had an up to date .csv file I could just re-import.

All is working OK now. I will write again with some suggestions from what I have observed in bringing in so many records.

Regards
Mark

I've been using Gas Cubby for a year or so (love it!) and decided to try the sync thingy. When I click the sync button I'm told I don't have an account. Settings tell me a confirmation email was sent. I found the mail, clicked on the link, and was taken to the cubby site which told me I was all set.

But the sync button still tells me I have no account.

What am I doing wrong?
